Understanding Women’s Role In The Society Today

Posted by in Blog

If you try to look at the role of women in the society today, you would notice how the days of women used to sitting at home, managing the household and looking after the children are now gone. Though not totally, it’s tremendously evident nowadays how modern women strived to stand parallel to men and become independent. The arrival of industrialization and technological development has changed the lifestyles of human beings.

The Early Days

Back in the old days, women were mostly known to stay at home being disengaged from the outside world. They play the domestic role such as tending the house and looking after the children. They were deprived from the responsibility of earning income for the family, totally leaving that part to their male counterparts. History even tells us how women from historic times had to deal and endure barbaric behaviors or the denial of their rights. The traditional role of women simply includes being an obedient daughter, a loving and caring sister, and a loyal wife. While men worked outside the home and served as the only breadwinner for the family, women governed the domestic sphere. If they did work, they have stereotypical female professions like as a secretary or nurse.

The Changes in Roles

As times have changed, women slowly started to move outside the home. Today, women have been offered bigger role to play in the society. They are delegated with more responsibility—even more than their male counterparts. Women are given the chance to venture out and work along with men in appending income for the family. Initially, men disagreed about women pursuing their career outside home. But as the needs increased and money starting to become scarce, they are forced to assent the reality and adapt with the changed situations.

Women started pursuing education in equal terms with males making the literacy rate among women to improve tremendously. Successively, women gradually started to join all walks of life. They started to think independently and took part equally in the outside world along with the male counterparts. The days of discriminating women slowly and little by little reduced as more and more women received recognition and applauses in all the fields of life including politics, sports and even in defense services.

The Role of Women

Modern women have indeed emerged from their inferior status. They are no longer limited to being involved in only domestic chores. Here are some of the prominent roles that women have taken part to:

  • Teachers

Being an educator has become the most important and common role played by women. They can be justly called the groomers of the future generations because they have more efficient capability of instilling in children traits of goodness and confidence so they become revered civilians of the society. Also, women are known to be more patient and tolerant compared to men making the ladies better teachers.

  • Doctor

Women have more scope as gynecologists in the medical field. This is because women are more comfortable with female doctors than male doctors. This is particularly observed in the eastern part of the globe.

  • Nurse

Although this has already been a noticeable role in the past, nursing patients in the hospital is another widespread subordinate role for women.

  • Security Forces and Police

Before, only men served as police officers. But women have brought a change in the constitution of security forces and police around the world. They have started wearing the same uniforms and performing the same difficult routines.

  • Architect

Women are also no longer behind in the spheres of architecture and construction. Many have already designed buildings for they are evenly capable as men in designing any elaborate patterns of building.

  • Scientists

Women have played an important role as scientists also, discovering and experimenting with the newest techniques.

Truly, women of today have acquired positions that used to be dominated by men only. You can now find a number of female doctors, aeronautical engineers, mathematicians, economists, Prime Minister and even candidates for presidential elections.

The Impact of the Changing Role

With the tremendous changes in women’s role in the society, it’s no surprise also that the impact is immense. Women have acquired a lot of ground in politics, the work force, and even more power within their own households. What then are the impacts of the changing role?

  • Gone were the days when women were deprived to voice their opinion in politics and unable to cast a vote or run for office. Today, modern times have allowed more than one woman running in the presidential campaign.
  • The work force is jam-packed with powerful women who lead as executives for major companies like Indra Nooyi, CEO of Pepsi, or Speaker of the House Nancy Peolosi. These women have occupied powerful positions that were never filled by women a long time ago.
  • Aside from the noticeable changes that have extensively affected the world, there have been elusive alterations in the role women play in the household. The concept of women being the “housewife” or primary homemakers and caretakers of children while men earn the money is now slowly diminishing. Both men and women now can be bread winners. Also, both spouse and parents are now splitting the responsibilities that come with the house and family.
  • And although the number of women making careers outside the home is increasing, it didn’t necessarily make men pick up the bulk of the housework or childcare. Report from The New York Times says that unemployed fathers consumed about as much time caring for their children as their working counterparts did; the laid-off dads made searching a new job their chief precedence. Such state of affairs isn’t really new to working mothers. Some of them have long dealt with the so-called “second shift”—coming home from their job in the professional world only to come home to spend just as much time cooking, cleaning and caring for children.

The Ugly Truth

The changes in the roles of women are greatly apparent now but a bothersome situation that remained to linger on for women in modern time is the negative sexual attention that women usually receive. The number of times a woman deals with negative sexual attention daily is unsurpassed to what a man receives. It is said that one in six women and one in thirty-three men will be a victim of sexual assault throughout their lifetime. This great disparity is not surprising at all to most though. In fact, it’s quite predictable. In our modern society, women have been reduced to sheer breasts, lips, legs, and a vagina. While women are greatly obtaining ground in educations, politics, and work force, women are unfortunately still treated as “piece of meat”.

Women have definitely come a long way over time and have inscribed a novel path for the women to come. And although changes have been made, men and women will keep on enduring different treatment irrespective of what day and age, or even socialization they are raised in.
